The history of Team Jumbo-Visma
Team Jumbo-Visma is a Dutch professional top-level sports team which is visible 365 days a year and performs at the highest level. With the merging of a professional cycling team and a professional speed skating team, the basis was created for a new organisational model in the Dutch top-level sports.
A model which revolves around sharing knowledge, cross-pollination, talent development and combining efforts. This approach is applied sportively, commercially and communicatively.
A new top-level sports culture will arise which – thanks to the sportive performances and a great appeal – will advertise ‘the Dutch pride’ as its most important value. With this, we will inspire a new generation of athletes and fans. Management, coaches, athletes and partners will share their knowledge, will work together and will encourage each other to aim higher, all with one goal: winning together!
In 2014, the speed skating team and the cycling team began a cooperation. Jac Orie and Richard Plugge established Team Oranje, the umbrella entinity of the teams. Since 1 October of that year, the speed skaters have been performing under this name, the cyclists followed on 1 January. The cycling team originated from, for example, Rabobank, Blanco and Belkin Pro Cycling Team. The speed skating team was formerly known as Team Postcode Loterij, DSB Bank, Team Activia and BrandLoyalty.
Succesful athletes represent or represented the team. For example Sven Kramer, Carlijn Achtereekte, Kjeld Nuis, Stefan Groothuis, Antoinette de Jong, Patrick Roest, Robert Gesink, Steven Kruijswijk, Dylan Groenewegen, Laurens ten Dam, Bauke Mollema and Primoz Roglic. Under the moniker of Team LottoNL-Jumbo, the athletes enjoyed some big successes. Golden medals at the Olympics, stage wins in the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España and titles on multiple speed skating world championships.
The success did not go unnoticed. After Lotto decided to quit its sponsorship, the team closed a big deal with Jumbo. The supermarket chain became the new title sponsor for at least five years.
“Jumbo has supported the speed skating and cycling team for many years now and we want to offer possibilities for sports talents to excel. In the meantime, this partnership gives us the possibility to inspire millions of customers to live more healthily. By combining forces between the two teams and our company we can actively carry out our expertise with regard to healthy food and encourage our customers to have a more active lifestyle”, CCO of Jumbo Colette Cloosterman-Van Eerd explained.
"It is great that brands like these want to commit themselves to Team Jumbo-Visma"
A few months later, software company Visma joined Jumbo as second name sponsor for at least five years. “Thanks to the fruitful cooperation and the development that we have gone through together, Jumbo dared to support our vision for a long and indefinite period of time. This has not gone unnoticed. It has created appeal within the sports world and also in the business world. The agreement with Visma is a result of this”, Plugge said about Visma.
Besides Jumbo and Visma, Bianchi, Vifit and HEMA also committed to the team for the long term. “It’s a wonderful list of sponsors and suppliers”, Jac Orie said. “It is great that brands like these want to commit themselves to Team Jumbo-Visma. It underlines the trust companies have in speed skating and cycling and especially in Team Jumbo-Visma. We are, of course, indebted to Jumbo because it provided a strong base for the teams.”
