Fem van Empel has marked her return to the field with a victory. The 21-year-old...
Milan Vader has won the fourth stage of the Gree-Tour of Guangxi. The Dutchman of Team Jumbo-Visma broke away from a thinned-out peloton in the final 300 metres and crossed the line first. In addition to the stage win, Vader also took the lead in the general classification.
The fourth stage of the Chinese stage race was 163 kilometres long and featured a final climb of about three kilometres with a gradient of 6 percent. The queen stage started quietly, and an early breakaway group of five riders led for a long time. The peloton caught them 10 kilometres before the finish. Team Jumbo-Visma rode strongly in the final and put Vader in a good position at the foot of the steep final climb.
"This is a victory from the heart."
Vader took matters into his own hands and rode away from the lead group in the final 300 metres. Despite an attempt by Frenchman Rochas to close the gap, Vader's lead proved enough. The Dutchman won the stage - his first victory of his career, Team Jumbo-Visma's 67th this season - by two seconds. Vader was emotional: "This is a victory from the heart. After everything that happened, especially following my accident in the Tour of the Basque Country last year, winning is an incredibly special feeling. It means the world to me."
"I am speechless”, sports director Maarten Wynants said. "Olav's win yesterday was a bit unexpected, but this is perhaps even more unexpected. We were aiming for a top-10 finish with Milan, as he was not fully fit. It is nice to see him win here, even if you look at his bad crash last season and the rehabilitation process. Milan had a free role today, and we agreed that he would follow the favourites, which he did in a fantastic way.”
Wynants looked ahead to the upcoming stages. "The following stages are flat and will give Olav a chance. We will also do everything we can to get Milan to the final victory.”
