Dumoulin forced to end season after training accident

Tom Dumoulin’s cycling season has come to a premature end due to a training accident. The Vice Olympic time trial champion was hit by a car during training today. The Dutchman broke his right wrist and has to undergo surgery tomorrow morning.

Dumoulin was on recon for his own Tour de Dumoulin, an event scheduled for the 3rd of October, in the Ardennes when tragedy struck. He was hit by a turning car, after which he ended up on the road surface through the hood.

“This is a big disappointment”, he says. “My season is finished. That’s a big deception, because I just got really good at it again. Also, during the training today I felt really strong. I had a lot of confidence that I could ride a very strong month.”

Dumoulin was thought to have good chances of a top result at the World Championships, later this month in Belgium. After the Worlds he was supposed to complete an Italian program, including the Tour of Lombardy. “I was really looking forward to that. Those are races that suit me very well, but unfortunately it won’t be for this year.”
