Bennett suffers from cold conditions in Pais Vasco’s fourth stage

George Bennett has lost his good position in the overall standings in the fourth stage of the Itzulia Basque Country. The leader of Team Jumbo-Visma suffered from the cold and wet conditions and lost a minute on his closest competitors in the streets of Arrigorriaga. As a result, Bennett dropped to 24th place in the GC.

Due to the rain and the cold the course was very dangerous and slippery. Team Jumbo-Visma kept Bennett in the front all day, but had to watch the New Zealander having a hard time on the final climb. Bennett was assisted in the difficult final by Jonas Vingegaard and Neilson Powless. Daan Olivier abandoned the race. The Dutchman has been suffering from pain in his left knee and leg for quite some time.

“It was a tough stage because of the rain and the cold”, Frans Maassen said. “George wasn’t able to go with the best in the end because he was suffering from the cold conditions. As a result, he has lost valuable time, But we will try again on the mountaintop finish tomorrow.”
