Vos takes leader's jersey from Henderson in La Vuelta Femenina

Marianne Vos has taken over the leader's jersey from teammate Anna Henderson in the Vuelta Femenina. The 35-year-old Jumbo-Visma rider finished a close second in the second stage to gain enough bonus seconds to take the red jersey.

Henderson, Vos, Amber Kraak and Riejanne Markus went into the second stage wearing the leader's, mountain, points and combativity jerseys thanks to their outstanding team-time trial success. Markus picked up four bonus seconds midway through the stage and virtually rode in the red leader's jersey.

In the final kilometre, the peloton was surprised by an attack from Chloe Dygert, who quickly opened up a significant gap. Henderson tried to close the gap, after which Vos passed the American with an ultimate sprint. The Dutchwoman looked to be on her way to victory but saw Charlotte Kool cross the line a little earlier.

"Tomorrow we will fight again for the stage win"

"You always want to win, so it's not satisfying to finish second", said Vos. "It was a technical final with many twists and turns. The team kept me out of trouble and positioned me well at the front. I was on Anna's wheel when Chloe surprised us all. She did it very strongly.

Vos believes she started her sprint too early. "I tried to hold on until the end, but unfortunately, Charlotte overtook me. Because of the six bonus seconds she gained, Vos will start tomorrow in the red leader's jersey. "It's nice that we managed to keep the jersey, but that wasn't the main goal. Tomorrow we will fight again for the stage win."
