Marianne Vos has started her road season with the seventh place in the Strade Bianche. The leader of Team Jumbo-Visma rode a strong race and the entire team were showing themselves in the front.
The team of sports director Marco Postma rode a very attentive race in and around Siena. Vos was well-positioned all day by her teammates. Next to Vos, Teuntje Beekhuis and Riejanne Markus were also in the front group when the race exploded. In the final, Vos countered an attack by Annemiek van Vleuten, but the two were not able to get away.
"Unfortunately, I could no longer make a difference in the end. That’s a pity."
“We were able to compete with the best until the final”, Marianne Vos said. “Unfortunately, I could no longer make a difference in the end. That’s a pity. We were well positioned for the gravel sections throughout the entire race and therefore we were able to save some energy for the final. Strade Bianche is a very fair race in that respect. In the final I gave it a try, but I didn’t have the best legs anymore. The feeling was good and we are heading to the upcoming races with a good feeling.”
"The team implemented the plan very well"
Sports director Marco Postma concurred with the post-race comments of his leader. “The team implemented the plan very well. Maybe someone could have been part of the breakaway in the first part of the race if I look at it in a critical way. In the end we had one rider in the decisive break with Marianne. So all in all, it was a good day for us.”
