Glorious return to cyclocross for Van Empel

Marianne Vos has finished second in the final stage of the Giro Donne. The 36-year-old Dutch rider of Team Jumbo-Visma put in a strong bunch sprint but ultimately came up a wheel short of Chiara Consonni. Fem van Empel finished her first grand tour in 11th place overall.
The final stage to Olbia was full of attacks, but nobody opened up a significant gap. Team Jumbo-Visma also rode vigilantly, and with Van Empel, Karlijn Swinkels and Linda Riedmann, they caused a few pinpricks. Nevertheless, nothing stood in the way of a bunch sprint. Riedmann skillfully guided Vos through the twisty final. The three-time world champion had to hold back on the final straight and couldn't pass Consonni.
"I'm a little disappointed."
"It was a hot day, and we knew we had to survive the climbs”, Vos said. "We wanted to keep as many riders as possible to control. That went very well. In the last corner, I briefly rode into the wind and had to drop back a bit. As a result, I had to come from too far back. I'm a little disappointed. On the other hand, it is part of the sprint because sometimes you have to take risks. We have had an excellent Giro as a team, although we would have liked another victory.”
