Marianne Vos has missed out on a podium place in the penultimate stage of the Giro d'Italia Donne. The 36-year-old rider of Team Jumbo-Visma was well in the lead in the final ascending kilometres but lacked the power to challenge for the win. The stage victory went to Kata Blanka Vas.
After a day of travel and rest, a 125-kilometre stage awaited the riders in Sardinia on Saturday. Team Jumbo-Visma set their sights on a possible final sprint and helped to ensure that all attempts to attack were thwarted. Vos, who hasn't had much of a sprint this Giro, seemed made for the explosive finish in Sassari.
Heading into the final kilometre, the multiple world champion was in an ideal position, but in the final sprint, she could not prevent her legs from going sour. A visibly struggling Vos had to settle for 10th place. "It was very tough and difficult today", she commented. "Unfortunately, this was the maximum possible."
