Vingegaard takes his first win of season at O Gran Camino

Jonas Vingegaard has won the second stage of the Spanish O Gran Camino. On the tough final climb to Monte Trega, the Dane broke away from the field with a few kilometres to go. Moments later, Vingegaard crossed the line first for the first time this season.

Team Jumbo-Visma aimed for the day’s victory in Spain. This was demonstrated by the fact that the team controlled the race and never allowed a breakaway group to get far away. Even after the seven were caught, the black and yellow formation kept riding at a high pace and headed for the foot of the final climb.

Johannes Staune-Mittet, who normally rides for the Dutch squad’s development team, and Attila Valter surrounded Vingegaard in the final kilometres. The former set a blistering pace that left the competition struggling. With just over two kilometres to go, Vingegaard took off, resulting in his first win of the season. It meant Team Jumbo-Visma’s second road victory of the year.

"This win feels very good. I felt excellent during the day”, Vingegaard said. "The guys worked hard. Luckily I had the legs to finish it off. The form is good, but I knew that beforehand. It was a tough climb, not least because of the cobbles in the last kilometre. I pushed myself to the limit. I wanted to win, especially for my girlfriend. Now we have the jersey, and of course, we want to keep it. The goal is to win the GC.”

The winner of the last Tour de France kept talking about his teammates' excellent work. "It's a very satisfying feeling to be able to finish off an excellent team effort in this way. Three guys in the team usually ride for our development team. It is impressive to see them holding their own here among the WorldTour teams. Everyone has done their bit. Hopefully, we can show some good things in the coming days.”
