In the second stage of the Ruta del Sol Antwan Tolhoek has once again finished in the front. On the steep final climb the rider from the Netherlands finished in twelfth place. Timo Roosen was part of the breakaway all day.
A few kilometres after the start Roosen made his move at the first attempt. The Dutchman of Team Jumbo-Visma was in the breakaway together with five other riders. At sixty kilometres from the finish, four of the leaders crashed in a descent. Roosen stayed on his bike and got a rider of Caja Rural with him. The two were eventually caught by the peloton at fifteen kilometres from the finish.
In the group of classification riders, Tolhoek and the young Finn Fisher-Black meanwhile positioned themselves at the front. Latvian Toms Skujins started the final kilometre on his own, but could no longer keep up his tempo when the unleashed men behind accelerated on the steep cobbled sections. Tolhoek eventually finished just outside the top ten, not long after followed by Fisher-Black.
"I feel good and I am in a good mood. The spirit is excellent."
Tolhoek, who is now ninth in the general classification, was a satisfied man. “The team has worked well. Timo was in the breakaway and we were comfortable in the peloton all day. At the end Nathan, Christoph and Pascal put me in good position so I had some energy left to attack. On the steep final climb I attacked, hoping to be able to maintain the pace. Unfortunately I couldn’t. I am happy that I was able to compete for the win again. I feel good and I am in a good mood. The team deserves a pat on the back for the way they rode today. The spirit is excellent.”
