Antwan Tolhoek finished second in the Ruta del Sol. In the final stage the Team Jumbo-Visma rider finished in eighth place and thus maintained his status as runner-up.
In the stage that covered only 107 kilometres, a group of escapees got away early on. The three riders in front did not get much space from the peloton. The Alta de la Geoda was the only obstacle along the way. The third category climb was part of the route twice in the last 40 kilometres.
At ten kilometres from the finish the escapees were caught and a group of thirteen riders, including Tolhoek and classification leader López, could battle for the stage victory. The Briton Hayter ultimately won the sprint. Tolhoek finished in the same time as eighth.
"Second is a good result for the team and for Antwan himself."
“Lopez was hard to beat this week”, sports director Robert Wagner said. “Second is a good result for the team and for Antwan himself. The team rode very strongly again today. They kept Antwan out of the wind all day. Although we didn’t win a stage we are very happy with the result.”
"This achievement is a sign to me that I’m doing well."
Tolhoek responded with delight. “Second place in the rankings is the crowning achievement of a great week. Fortunately, we did not get into the danger zone today. The team has done a good job. I indicated at the beginning of the week that I felt okay and that I wanted to go for a good classification. I am glad it worked out. Of course I secretly hoped to cross the finish line with my hands in the air. But I’m happy with this result. This achievement is a sign to me that I’m doing well. The coming days are all about peace and quiet. Then I join part of the squad in the training camp on Sierra Nevada. From there I can work towards my next goals this season.”
