Team Jumbo-Visma also passed the second stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico well. Mike Teunissen, who made his return to racing in the Italian stage race after an injury, claimed tenth place in the final sprint.
Another flat stage was scheduled for today. It comprised more than two hundred kilometres along the coast from Camaiore to Follonica. Before the last uphill part towards Scarlino, the early escapees had been caught. Paul Martens tried to surprise with an attack in the final five kilometres, but the pace in the peloton was already too high. The race ended in a bunch sprint.
"I still have to get used to all the dangerous tricks that are performed in the final."
Teunissen joined a sprint for the first time since his return. “When I saw that Pascal Eenkhoorn and Timo Roosen were no longer able to reach me, I took part in the bunch sprint myself. I still have to get used to all the dangerous tricks that are performed in the final. It was not really a good sprint, but I expect it will only get better in the coming days and weeks.”
Sports director Addy Engels did not find the stage very exciting. “It was a long ride in which it immediately became clear that it was going to end in a sprint. In the final, Mike was well-positioned in the front. The sprint train with Pascal tried to move up, but there was no space. Mike stayed in position and finished tenth.”
