Team Jumbo-Visma loses Foss in second stage Coppi e Bartali

For Tobias Foss, the Italian stage race Coppi e Bartali is over. The Norwegian champion crashed early in the stage and was unable to continue. Fortunately a medical check revealed no fractures or any other serious injuries.

A four-rider front group formed early in the stage. They gained a maximum lead of five minutes. At about one hundred kilometres from the finish there were continuous attacks, which lasted until the finish. Johannes Staune-Mittet and Gijs Leemreize tried to break away on behalf of Team Jumbo-Visma. A select group remained to sprint for the victory, but Team Jumbo-Visma could not play a significant role.

"It's a loss for the team and it’s sad for Foss."

Sierk Jan de Haan

Sports director Sierk Jan de Haan was one of the first to get to the Norwegian champion. "Fortunately, Tobias is kind of okay. Though he does have a big ‘egg’ under his eye and he complained about pain at the back of his head. We remained with him for a long time and decided not to let him continue riding. He was checked at the hospital and fortunately it is not too bad. This is a loss for the team and it’s sad for Tobias. He was doing well beforehand, but there's nothing we can do about it. It's part of cycling. Hopefully, he won’t be out for too long and can resume training soon."

The Team Jumbo-Visma riders had to quickly flip the switch after Foss' crash. "Johannes and Gijs were in the breakaway once. That was pretty early on. It was a hectic, tough race with high heart rates and many accelerations, almost like a scratch race. Our guys managed to position themselves well. Then it’s not much about tactics anymore. The strongest remained. Our young guys rode well in a field with world-class riders, so I am very satisfied with that", De Haan said.
