Labecki comes up short in second stage of Setmana Ciclista Valenciana

Coryn Labecki has missed out on another podium finish in the second stage of the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana. The Team Jumbo-Visma sprinter did not get far in the bunch sprint and saw Elisa Balsamo run away with the victory for the second consecutive day.

The second stage, between Borriana and Vila-Real, had three climbs. Especially the last proved to be a difficult hurdle for the Team Jumbo-Visma riders. Labecki and Karlijn Swinkels, among others, had been dropped from the peloton but were able to return quickly with the help of some teammates. The remaining part of the stage wasn't too exciting, which meant another sprint for the stage win.

Labecki, who finished third on Thursday, did not get further than place seven today. "We had hoped for more. We wanted to have a shot at the stage win like yesterday, but unfortunately, it wasn't possible", race coach Carmen Small said. "It was a difficult final. There were 23 roundabouts in the last 13 kilometres, making it quite technical."

Small believes Team Jumbo-Visma showed good things. "They took control early in the race and protected Coryn well. We should have been more careful with our forces in the closing phase. It's been a nice learning moment for the coming days. We now set our sights on Sunday as we have no classification ambitions."
