Marianne Vos has also won the fifth stage of the Simac Ladies Tour. The Team Jumbo-Visma Women rider was clearly the strongest in the sprint on the local circuit in Arnhem. For 34-year-old Vos it is the third victory in the Dutch stage race.
Besides the final stage, Vos also won the fourth stage and the prologue of the Simac Ladies Tour. It is the eleventh victory of the season for Team Jumbo-Visma Women. Vos also won the points classification and Anouska Koster took off with the mountain jersey.
Teammate Teuntje Beekhuis showed herself early in the tough final stage. On the hilly course with two thousand altitude metres she jumped with the break with more than fifty kilometres to go. The tough conditions took their toll on the leading group in the final phase. In the sprint of a reduced peloton, Vos eventually won.
“It is unbelievable. It was a fantastic week”, Vos said enthusiastically. “Today we wanted to keep control of the race. We had Teuntje in the breakaway, which was perfect. In the final it looked like the gap was going to be closed. Then we wanted to try to take the win in the bunch sprint.”
“We tried to secure the mountain jersey for Anouska already in the first sprints. That was a great goal. After that we wanted to go for the stage win. It is very cool that we succeeded. In addition to the many altitude metres, the bad weather played a big role. It was also nice to be able to race in front of an audience in the Netherlands again. It’s great that so many people were standing alongside the road, even in the rain. It was a very nice race.”
