Forceful Team Jumbo-Visma not rewarded in first stage Tour de Hongrie

Team Jumbo-Visma has failed to achieve a top result in the first stage of the Tour de Hongrie. Despite several attacks in the final, the stage was decided in a sprint by a reduced peloton. The Dutch team played no role in this.

After the early break was caught, Team Jumbo-Visma attacked several times on the last climb of the day. Just before the summit, Antwan Tolhoek and Tobias Foss escaped, together with seven other riders. This leading group never got more than twenty seconds from the peloton. In the last kilometres Tolhoek tried to solo to the finish line, but he was caught by the large group.

"It was a brave attempt by Antwan in the final"

Sierk Jan de Haan

Sports director Sierk Jan de Haan saw that his team raced attentively in the front of the peloton. “The peloton had a lot of speed on the last climb of the day. The entire team was in the first part of the peloton. A group of strong riders got a gap just before the summit. Antwan and Tobias were part of that group. Unfortunately, the collaboration was not optimal and the lead did not increase. The riders looked at each other a lot. It was a brave attempt by Antwan in the final, but unfortunately he was caught and the stage ended in a sprint. Lennard Hofstede and Chris Harper crashed in the last hectometres. Apart from a few abrasions, they seem to be doing fine.”
