Team Jumbo-Visma reaches new deal with world champion De Jong

Team Jumbo-Visma have signed world champion Antoinette de Jong to a contract extension through the 2023/2024 season.

De Jong, who is in her fourth season with Team Jumbo-Visma, is happy that she can continue her future with the team that she 'really likes' being a part of. "I am very happy with my contract extension. It's always a nice feeling when a team expresses so much confidence in you", the reigning world champion in the 3,000m said. "I really like the team and Jac Orie's training schedules definitely work for me, so there is no reason for me to leave."

Although De Jong has never been with one team for so long, she believes that she hasn’t reached her ceiling yet. "Jac is the first coach, who knows how to help me with my development. He also knows better than anyone how to let me excel at the right moments. He wants the best for all his speed skaters and puts a lot of time into individual training schedules. With a coach like him you just know that you will be at your best during the important races."

Coach Orie is pleased with the contract extension of De Jong at Team Jumbo-Visma. "Antoinette is a rising star, who keeps getting better and better every single year. Looking at how much growth she has been through of late, I'm sure she can be even better at all distances."

De Jong is currently having a very successful season. At the start of the speed skating season, the allround star captured the Dutch title in the ladies’ 1,500-meter race. She also secured four spots for the Beijing Winter Olympics at the Dutch Olympic trials and earlier this month she won gold in the ladies’ 1,500-meter race and the Team Pursuit at the European Speed Skating Championships at Thialf, Heerenveen. “I can only be satisfied with the way things are going at the moment. I hope I can continue this upward trend towards the Olympics.”

Even though De Jong is successful nowadays. The two-time European allround champion says that her career has only just begun. “I really want to become world champion allround one day,” an ambitious De Jong said. “I also want to compete with the best speed skaters at the European and world championships every year and show that I have good form at the right moments. If I can improve in all areas, I hope I am able to set a world record one day.”
