After signing Dai Dai N'tab, Team Jumbo-Visma has managed to agree to terms on a two-year deal with another star sprinter. Former world champion Kai Verbij will be part of the team of coach Jac Orie until at least the Winter Olympics of Beijing as well.
In 2019, Verbij became world champion in the men's 1,000-meter race at the ISU World Single Distances Championships in Inzell. He seized gold at the World Sprint Speed Skating Championships in 2017. Last season, he won a bronze medal in the men's 1,000-meter race at the ISU European Single Distances Championships. Verbij is also a two-time world champion in the men's Team Sprint.
"It has been a very hectic week for me, because I had to choose between the two best speed skating teams in the Netherlands. It was not an easy decision, because my former team has been very good to me over the last couple of years", Verbij said.
"However, I have some very important seasons ahead of me and I really want to improve myself and achieve some great goals. With the Winter Olympic of Beijing taking place in two years, I think it is the right decision to sign with Team Jumbo-Visma. I look forward to work together with coach Jac and my future teammates."
"I think it is amazing that after Dai Dai, we have been able to sign Kai to our team as well", coach Orie said. "Along with Hein (Otterspeer), Thomas (Krol) and Dai Dai, we will have a great group of sprinters next season, with whom we can compete for medals on both a national and international level."
"Over the last couple of seasons, Kai has proven to be a very good speed skater. However, I am sure his performances have not reached a ceiling yet. Kai is already really strong in the men's 1,000-meter races, but I think he can achieve some great things at 500 meters also. I look forward to be working together with him the upcoming seasons."
