Team Jumbo-Visma has signed six speed skaters, who form the new marathon skating team next season. Peter de Vries has been appointed as coach, while Diane Valkenburg will be the trainer and human movement scientist. The team, with Unox as its important partner, will compete in the highest division of marathon skating and is under the sportive leadership of coach Jac Orie of Team Jumbo-Visma.
The group consists of Ingmar Berga (35), Erik Jan Kooiman (33), Mats Stoltenborg (27), Robert Post (27), Casper de Gier (24) and Harm Visser (19). The team will be a great mix of talented and experienced speed skaters. The experienced speed skater Kooiman managed to win the Alternatieve Elfstedentocht on the Austrian Weissensee in 2018.
"I am happy with the team we have put together", Orie, sportive director of the speed skating team, said. "The team covers all aspects, since we have got speed skaters for the races on artificial ice rinks and competitions on natural ice, but some of them can do long track speed skating as well."
"I think it is a great challenge to see if we are able to become one of the best marathon skating teams of the Netherlands in the next couple of years. Over the past years, De Vries has proven he is a very good coach, so I am confident we can make it happen."
"I think we have put together a great group of athletes", coach De Vries said. "The first year will be a learning season for us as newcomers and we want to prove ourselves in the various competitions and compete for the podium a couple of times. By signing some young skaters, we also have a long-term vision. That is something I really like. Our main goal is to become one of the best marathon skating teams of the Netherlands."
As previously announced, the team will go on the ice under the flag of Team Jumbo-Visma, with Unox as its important partner and it will participate in the NK Marathon, the Marathon Cup-competitions on Dutch artificial ice rinks, Grand Prix-competitions on foreign natural ice and competitions on Dutch natural ice when it is frozen enough.
"A lot of speed skating fans love to watch the marathon speed skating competition. When there is natural ice, it is one of the most popular sports in our country", De Vries said. "That’s why it’s amazing that our partners, and especially Unox, have given us the opportunity to start a complete marathon skating team. I am really looking forward to get started."
