Olympic champion Achtereekte to undergo shoulder surgery

Carlijn Achtereekte will leave the training camp of Team Jumbo-Visma in Inzell and will travel back to the Netherlands on Thursday to undergo surgery on her left shoulder later this week.

The 30-year-old speed skater dislocated her shoulder during a training session at Thialf Heerenveen at the beginning of last week. An MRI revealed that Achtereekte has some joint damage. After talking to the medical team of Jumbo-Visma, it was decided to have surgery.

"This is quite a disappointment", Achtereekte said. "The training sessions went really well and I felt super fit. I have to accept the situation I am in right now. I will do everything to come back even stronger."

Two years ago, Achtereekte managed to claim her first Olympic gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Last season, she seized silver in the ladies' 3,000-meter race at the ISU World Single Distance Championships.

Team Jumbo-Visma is currently staying in Inzell to prepare for the new speed skating year. The team of coach Jac Orie will return to the Netherlands on Wednesday of next week.
