In the column 'Stay Home Stories', the speed skaters of Team Jumbo-Visma talk about their lives and current activities during the coronavirus.
Kars, how is it going?
"I am doing well and I am feeling healthy at the moment. It is not hard for me to get through the days. Fortunately, the coronavirus has not affected my speed skating season. Right now I am making the best of the situation. The only thing I cannot do at the moment, is going outside for a cup of coffee, but I don't really care about that. With all the big problems in the world and the health of many people at risk, I can easily put the life of being a top athlete aside."
What do your workouts and training look like at the moment?
"I try to maintain my fitness level as good as possible by doing some bike rides. As long as it is possible, I like to do them outside. I always go at times when there are not so many people outside. I take the coronavirus pandemic very seriously and adhere strictly to the measures provided by the government. In cases it is too busy outside, I can always decide to do my training on Tacx rollers. Recently, I have been living at my parents' house most of the time. They have a huge farm with large fields. That is great, because even when I decide to stay at home, I can do my workouts outside."
How do you spend your days?
"During this coronavirus, I am on Netflix more often, but I also like to read books. That way I try to stay mentally fit."
Do you watch a lot of series or movies?
"To be honest, I don't watch many series or movies. Recently, I watched the series Fargo. I always thought it would be a little bit old-fashioned, but I really liked it. I recommend people to watch it. At the moment I am watching the American television series Suits with my girlfriend."
What kind of music do you listen to?
"When I am at home, I like to play Spotify on my television. I like listening to B.B. King's music."
Do you have any tips for people to stay fit?
"I would definitely recommend people to stay fit. During this coronavirus you can find many home workouts on the internet. That is great. Especially, because we have to stay inside as much as possible. However, I also like to get some fresh air, so every day I go outside for a couple of minutes. For me it is easy to avoid being around people, since I don't live in a crowded place. I would recommend people that live in large cities to go outside in the morning. That way you can still adhere strictly to measures provided by the government, but also get some fresh air. For example, you can go for a run just before breakfast. It doesn't have to be a long run. Twenty minutes is more than enough to stay fit."
With good training also comes healthy food. What is your favorite dish?
"Risotto with spinach, tomatoes and chorizo is my absolute favorite at the moment!"
What other sports do you like?
"Normally, I would be watching the cycling spring classics right now. I always look forward to them. Unfortunately, they have all been canceled. I am a cycling fan, so I have tuned into a few historic races from the past. On Sunday, there will be a virtual Tour of Flanders. I am curious what is going to happen."
What is your favorite game?
"I don't have a Playstation. I like playing board games with my family in the evening. Lately, we have been playing Memory. We used to play that game a lot in the past. Just like the old days, I still win most of the games, haha."
Which apps on your phone are running in overtime?
"I would not call it overtime. I like being on Instagram. That is probably the app I use the most at the moment."
What is your guilty pleasure?
"I like to drink a beer during the offseason. Blond and specialty beers are my favorite!"
