In the column 'Stay Home Stories', the speed skaters of Team Jumbo-Visma talk about their lives and current activities during the coronavirus.
Joy, how is it going?
"Sometimes I feel bored, but besides that it is going really well. We must accept the situation that we are in."
What do your workouts and training look like at the moment?
"Most of the time I am with Kjeld (Nuis), so sometimes we go for a bike ride together. I try to maintain my fitness level as good as possible by doing home workouts, such as ab and jump exercises. Since everything is closed, I cannot do a strength training. It is unfortunate, but we make the best of it. Fortunately, our team has arranged some Tacx Neo rollers. That makes me really happy, because it is supposed to rain next week."
How do you spend your days?
"I was supposed to go on vacation last week, but with everything that is going on we did not want to go anymore. I take the coronavirus pandemic very seriously and adhere strictly to the measures provided by the government. I only leave the house for groceries and other essentials. At home I love to do jigsaw puzzles, but I also spend time studying. Furthermore, I clean the house or I play games on my Nintendo Wii. Wii Fit, Mario Kart and Just Dance are some games I play. Last Friday Kjeld and I played Wii Fit together. We laughed so hard. With games that range from ski jumping to snowboarding, we still get a little bit of that winter sports feeling, haha."
Do you watch a lot of series or movies?
"No, not at all. I don't really like series and movies. I can watch them for about ten minutes and then I already get bored."
What kind of music do you listen to?
"I listen to a wide range of music. Most of the time I open up the Spotify app and start listening to one of the playlists, like 'Mega Hit Mix' or 'Urban Hits'. Sometimes I think it is funny to listen to Snollebollekes."
Do you have any tips for people to stay fit?
"I would recommend to avoid long training sessions indoors, because they can be really tough on the head. During this coronavirus you can find many home workouts on the internet. Kjeld did a home workout with Arie Boomsma and they just released it on Videoland."
With good training also comes healthy food. What is your favorite dish?
"For breakfast I always eat the same: muesli, served with yoghurt and some fruit. I love pancakes, so sometimes I eat them for lunch. However, I also like to make my own sandwich. Smashed avocado is something I really like. For dinner I like to make sweet potato fries with some meat. When it comes to my favorite dish, I have to say homemade tandoori chicken."
What other sports do you like?
"Besides speed skating I am fond of cycling. Last summer Kjeld and I went to southern Spain. We loved riding our bikes there. The scenery was so beautiful."
What is your favorite game?
"Kjeld and I like to play a game called Skip-Bo. At first, Kjeld was never able to beat me, but he is getting better at it every single day. Right now, he is giving me more resistance, haha. Every morning we play that game during breakfast and we should definitely keep doing it."
Which apps on your phone are running in overtime?
"FaceTime! With that app I stay in touch with my friends, family and other speed skaters. I also use the apps: Instagram, WhatsApp and Snapchat. Lastly, I really like to be on Pinterest to find some recipes or to look at interior design styles."
What is your guilty pleasure?
"Pizza! Pizza Parma is my favorite."
