Team Jumbo-Visma has navigated leader Primoz Roglic through the fourth stage of ...
In the column 'Stay Home Stories', the speed skaters of Team Jumbo-Visma talk about their lives and current activities during the coronavirus.
Carlijn, how is it going?
"I am feeling well. Last Friday, I had an exercise test for the new speed skating season and it went really well. Over the last couple of weeks, I had maintained my fitness level as good as possible, so I think that helped a lot, but I was still really impressed by the outcome of my test. It is always nice to start on a high note."
What do your workouts and training look like at the moment?
"I ride my bike three to four times a week. I often go with my teammate Joy (Beune). Besides that, I do a weight training once a week. For a change, I like to grab my mountain bike or go for a run. These are things I don't do often, but that makes them extra fun. We have had really nice weather of late, so it was really nice to train outside. However, I adhered strictly to the measures provided by the government."
How do you spend your days?
"Last weekend, I was supposed to go on a short vacation with my best friends. I have a group of friends that consists of ten girls, with whom I go on vacation every year. Since two years, we always go in April, because then I can go with them. With everything that is going we could not go anymore, so we decided to video chat each other. First I was like: it is never going to work with ten girls in a chat at the same time, but it actually went really well. We started at 8.30 PM and talked for more than three hours. I had so much fun. I also like spending time with my friend Sjoukje, who lives in Heerenveen. You could call us 'corona buddies'. We see each other three to four times a week. We both like baking, so that's what we did on Easter Monday. We baked way too much, so we decided to bring her friends some food as well."
Do you watch a lot of series or movies?
"I have always liked watching series, so that has not changed because of the coronavirus. When there are new episodes of series available, I can watch them for many hours straight. For example, I have already watched all the episodes of La Casa de Papel. Especially in between my practises or in the evening, I like to watch series."
What kind of music do you listen to?
"It was only because of these crazy days that I noticed how quiet it actually is in my house. I did not have a sound system, so I decided to buy a soundbar. It is so awesome. My music taste is very various. On Spotify I like to listen to the playlist called 'Summer 2020', but I also like songs from the old days."
Do you have any tips for people to stay fit?
"I would definitely recommend people to stay fit. During this coronavirus you can find many home workouts on the internet. That is great. Especially, because we have to stay inside as much as possible. I would say: be creative. You can adhere to the measures provided by the government, but still get your workout done. You can go for a run or grab your bike for a ride. Set a goal for yourself, like 10,000 steps every single day. I really like to watch the Zappsport videos with former soccer player Nathan Rutjes. He shows kids how to stay fit during the coronavirus. That is great!"
With good training also comes healthy food. What is your favorite dish?
"I really like to cook and bake, so that is something I have done a lot of late. My favorite dish is not my own recipe. A couple of weeks ago, I was at my friends' house and we cooked a very delicious dish. We made stuffed zucchini with tuna and risotto. I have recently made it myself. Everything homemade. Sjoukje, my corona buddy, came by and kept saying how delicious it was. When you drink a glass of dry white wine with it, it is even better."
What other sports do you like?
"I am a huge cycling fan. During the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France or Vuelta a España, my television is running all day long. Last Sunday, the Amstel Gold Race was supposed to take place. It is really unfortunate it got canceled. Hopefully, the Tour de France will still go ahead."
What is your favorite game?
"I hate playing games on a Playstation or a Xbox. There is nothing like board games. Of course, it is really hard to play them right now, since you need a lot of people, but I love them. On Easter, I got to know a new game, called Ligretto. On Sunday, we could not stop playing that game. At the beginning, I did not really like it, because I was not able to win. During one of the first games I threw my cards on the table. My brother and his girlfriend could not stop laughing. Carlijn, it is just a game. I had to tell myself that many times."
Which apps on your phone are running in overtime?
"I really like shopping, but since the stores are closed, I need to buy my things online. Right now, the online shopping apps are running in overtime. I went shopping like crazy. A couple of weeks ago, the couriers complained about the amount of work they have. I have to admit, I am one of the reasons why they are so busy, so I am sorry, haha. I also use the FaceTime app more than I used to do. It is the best way to stay connected to my friends and family."
What is your guilty pleasure?
"When you want to play a game of Kolonisten van Catan, you can always wake me up. If possible, I could play that game every day. I love it. I am a freak. It is really bad, because my own brother does not like to play against me anymore, haha."
