After a great sixteenth stage performance by Roglic, the Slovenian rider crashed in the final stage and had to leave the Vuelta a España. Gesink was close to victory on stage 18, but was beaten at the finish by Remco Evenepoel, the eventual winner of the Vuelta a España.
Team Jumbo-Visma did not let the loss of teammate Roglic get them down and also managed to show themselves in the final stages. Mike Teunissen sprinted to fifth place in stage 19, and in stage 20 Gesink was again in the race for the day's victory.
