Primoz Roglic has increased his leading position in the Giro d’Italia. The Slovenian leader of Team Jumbo-Visma was the only one of the GC riders to avoid a crash in the final due to good positioning. He therefore gained eighteen seconds on his main competitors. In the fourth stage to Frascati, Roglic finished sixth in the sprint.
Nothing much happened until the final in the 235 kilometre long stage. A leading group of three riders got a maximum lead of twelve minutes and was caught in the last ten kilometres. Roglic was well-positioned by his Team Jumbo-Visma teammates and managed to stay out of trouble thanks to the protection of his team. Tom Leezer then dropped him off at the foot of the final climb.
“This day was far from easy. It was a nervous stage and you needed to pay attention all the time”, the maglia rosa explained. “All GC guys wanted to maintain their position in the front of the peloton and it was a constant fight to retain those positions. It’s a pity about the crash. The team did a perfect job once again today and kept me out of trouble. I can’t thank them enough for that. The Giro is far from over. Every day, something happens, so we have to keep the focus.”
