Team Jumbo-Visma has shown its most combative side in the Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli. The team of Frans Maassen coloured the final with George Bennett and Neilson Powless. The American attacked just before the final climb, but was reeled in five kilometres from the finish line. As a result, a top ten result was no longer possible.
“It was a fairly quiet race, until the last five laps”, Powless said. “Once George and I were off the front, I tried to attack alone. That way, George could sit on with Moscon and Houle before the final climb. The plan was that be would make his move there, but unfortunately, that didn’t work out as the two other guys didn’t have enough to chase. We showed our cards a bit early, but we gave it a good shot and I think we can be happy with the way we rode as a team.”
Sports director Frans Maassen concurred with Powless. “The team rode a great race and they showed themselves from their best side. I think we could have achieved more, but we can’t always win. All in all, this gives us confidence for the next Italian races that are scheduled for next week.”
